A workable study budget starts with your specific course, campus, household and city. Australia does not have one student living cost that fits every applicant. Treat any national estimate as a starting point, then compare current quotes before accepting an offer. This guide uses official sources checked on 23 September 2026 and deliberately does not promise a fixed cost.
Build the full cost picture
Request the current tuition schedule from the institution for your actual course and year, including compulsory materials, placement or laboratory charges where applicable. Compare the course and campus in the CRICOS register. Add the Student visa application charge, travel, initial accommodation, bond, utilities, phone, transport and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). A scholarship may cover only some of these items; read its official benefit and exclusions carefully.
Compare housing and the city around it
Study Australia describes campus accommodation, homestay, private rental and shared housing. Compare not just advertised rent but bond, utilities, furnishings, commute and tenancy conditions. Ask the institution’s accommodation office about verified options; inspect terms before sending money and know your tenancy rights. The official Cost of Living Calculator lets you vary accommodation, transport and lifestyle choices. Its result is an estimate, not a guarantee of your own expenses.
Account for health and the first month
Most Student visa holders must maintain OSHC for their stay; check what it covers and what it excludes. Keep a buffer for deposits, groceries and local transport before any employment begins. Do not assume a part-time job will pay the tuition bill: work rights are limited during term and finding a job is never guaranteed. If money becomes difficult after arrival, the provider’s international student support team is a sensible first contact.
Financial evidence is a separate check
The amount and type of financial evidence requested for a Student visa are determined by Home Affairs, not by a calculator or a university marketing page. Use the Document Checklist Tool for your passport country and provider and check the current subclass 500 requirements. Your real budget may be higher than a visa minimum, especially with dependants or high housing costs.
A simple comparison sheet
- Course and institution: tuition, payment dates, compulsory fees, scholarship conditions.
- City and housing: rent, bond, utilities, commute and tenancy terms.
- Arrival and ongoing expenses: flights, visa, OSHC, food, phone, transport and contingency.
- Funding: confirmed sources, currency conversion and whether support arrives before fees are due.
